Instructor of History

Barbara A. Martin was born in Lexington, Kentucky, but has lived in Owensboro her entire teaching career. She is retired from the Daviess Co. Public Schools where she taught 32 years as a middle school social studies teacher, assistant basketball coach, head academic coach, and journalism advisor. She graduated from Logan Senior High School in Logan, WV., has a BS in Ed. from Concord University (WV), MA (History/Education) Western Kentucky University, Rank I in Secondary Supervision and Administration.

She also taught at Bellarmine University, Owensboro Community College, Brescia University, and the University of Southern Indiana. During her public school teaching career, Ms. Martin was very active in the National Education Association serving in various leadership positions including Mid-Atlantic Coordinator Women’s Caucus, District and Local Presidents. She has been awarded as Outstanding Social Studies Teacher by the Kentucky Council for Social Studies, Who’s Who in American Education. Ms. Martin served as Kentucky’s representative on the White House Committee on Education during the George H.W. Bush administration. She was named Adjunct Teacher of the Year 2020 at Owensboro Community and Technical College.

She continues to be active in education and community organizations, serving on church councils and past chair of the Owensboro Women’s Golf Association. Her interests are many and varied: UK and KWC basketball, golf, travel, photography, writing, local history, gardening. She has been teaching at Kentucky Wesleyan since 2010.
