Darrell PLUS Center
The Darrell
PLUS Center, located in the Library Learning Center, provides many
services to all KWC students including peer tutoring, study sessions,
writing assistance, and study skills assistance. One great thing about
going to a small school like Kentucky Wesleyan is the amount of individual
help students can get with classes. First of all, professors can offer
answers to questions students have. They are here to help and can get
students on the right track.
Sometimes, though, students decide they need even more help, especially
in the evenings and during the weekend. That's where the PLUS Center can
help. The PLUS Center offers the following FREE services:
STUDY SESSIONS
The PLUS Center offers free study sessions for courses when two or more
students request them. Also, if professors request sessions for their
classes, the PLUS Center sets them up. Study sessions are led by tutors
recommended by professors. Usually four to ten students attend these sessions,
so they can receive some individual attention.
INDIVIDUAL TUTORING
Sometimes students need to meet one-on-one with a tutor. If so, the PLUS
Center can give names and telephone numbers of tutors recommended for
specific courses. Again, this service is free to all Kentucky Wesleyan
students. Click here to access a list of recommended tutors.
WRITING AND STUDY SKILLS ASSISTANCE
The PLUS Center offers two services to all students to help them improve
their writing and study skills. If students need help on a paper for any
subject, the Director, a member of the English faculty, or a tutor recommended
by an English faculty member will work with them individually to increase
writing effectiveness. Also, the PLUS Center has special materials to
improve test-taking and note-taking skills. Students can stop by the PLUS
Center to receive more information about these two services.
TESTING AND SPECIAL SERVICES
The PLUS Center administers various tests and serves as a residual test
center for the ACT. The PLUS Center also serves students with special
needs in testing and note-taking, working with faculty to provide assistance
when needed.
WORKSHOPS
Throughout the school year, the PLUS Center offers free workshops open
to all Wesleyan students including informational sessions on taking the
GRE and LSAT, test-taking and note-taking workshops, and workshops for
writing students.
WE ARE HERE TO HELP
PLUS COURSES
In addition to these services, students may enroll in four one-hour
credit courses offered through the PLUS Center.
PC 1101 Writing Laboratory--1 hour.
Intensive work in writing, including basic grammar and punctuation, spelling,
and structure. Additional one hour tutoring per week required.
PC 1102 College Study Skills--1 hour.
Effective study habits for college, including notetaking, textbook reading,
essay and objective test-taking, and time management.
PC 1103 Mathematics Laboratory--1
hour. A course for students who are not ready to take college math. Topics
include rational numbers, variables, ratios and linear equation, inequalities,
and exponents.
PC 1104--05 Reading Laboratory--1
hour each. A sequence of two courses to help improve reading skills by
providing students with skills needed to succeed in college. Topics include
phonics review, vocabulary building, and passage comprehension.
Each course meets two times a week, and students receive as much individualized
