DUNCAN NAMED GLVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR SECOND TIME (February 28, 2000)
Kentucky Wesleyan junior guard Lorico Duncan averaged 16.0 points and was the key figure in leading his team to two road victories to earn Player of the Week
in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. He became the first player in the league this season to earn Player of the Week honor twice. His first honor came two weeks ago on Feb. 14.
A 6-foot-2 junior, Duncan scored 17 points to lead the Panthers to a big 73-69 triumph over host Lewis on Thursday. He hit the go-ahead basket with 1:58 left in that contest and scored the final five points in the game.
He came back on Saturday to hit a game-winning three pointer at the buzzer in overtime as KWC wrapped up its 13th GLVC title with a thrilling 92-89 victory at UW-Parkside. Duncan scored 15 points in that game as KWC wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the week’s GLVC Tournament with the victory.
The No. 4-ranked Panthers will enter the tournament with a 24-2 record and will be going for their third straight tournament championship when the play No. 8 seed Missouri St. Louis (12-14) at 8:30 CT on Thursday in Evansville, Ind., at Roberts Stadium.
HARPER SETS ANOTHER NCAA RECORD
(February 21, 2000)Kentucky Wesleyan College head men's basketball coach Ray Harper broke the NCAA record for best career start (by wins) in four seasons with 108 when the Panthers defeated visiting SIU Edwardsville 80-68 on Saturday. Everett Case of North Carolina State (1947-50) with 107 held the old record.
Harper already broke the NCAA (modern-era) record for fastest to reach 100 career victories by reaching the milestone in 114 games on Jan. 27. He is 108-15 (87.8%) in his fourth season at Kentucky Wesleyan where he won the college's record breaking seventh NCAA Division II National Championship last season with a 35-2 recorded and was unanimously voted Division II National Coach of the Year.
No. 4 Kentucky Wesleyan, 22-2 overall and first in the Great Lakes Valley Conference at 16-2, will end the regular season on the road with two GLVC contests. KWC travels to Joliet, Illinois on Thursday to face Lewis (18-6, 12-6) at 7:30 p.m. CT and then to Kenosha, Wisconsin for a Saturday afternoon game at Wisconsin Parkside (8-16, 4-14) at 3:00 CT.
23 STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-CONFERENCE
(February 8, 2000)A record 23 Kentucky Wesleyan College student-athletes were named to the 1999 Great Lakes Valley Conference Fall Sports All-Academic team today.
Four student-athletes are repeating from last season's squad including two-time honorees include Dominique Crisp (soccer) a sophomore from Freemont, Calif./Mission HS; Robert Harmon (soccer) a senior from St. Louis, Mo./St. Mary's HS; Robin Joska (soccer) a junior Chrudm, Czech Republic; and Kimberly Zolk (soccer) from LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township.
First-time honorees include Whitney Adamson (volleyball) a sophomore from Hatfield, Ind./South Spencer HS; Mario Castro (soccer) a freshman from Mexico City, Mexico; Tiffany Cowan (golf) a freshman from Russellville, Ky./Russellville HS; Brian Crowe (golf) a junior from Manitou, Ky./Hopkins County Central; Jeremy Curtis (soccer) a junior from Morganfield, Ky./Union County HS; Maureen Fagan (soccer) a freshman from Owensboro/Owensboro HS; Hanna Flaspoehler (tennis) a freshman from Owensboro/Daviess County HS; Tara Grundhoefer (volleyball) a freshman from Dale, Ind./Heritage Hills HS; Carrie Johnson (soccer) a sophomore from Louisville/Mercy HS; Jeremy Kemplin (soccer) a senior from Mt. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a starter or significant substitute and the student-athlete has a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 or has attained a GPA of at least 3.2 in each of the preceding two semesters. Freshmen or first-year transfers must achieve a GPA of 3.2 or higher during the fall semester.
JOHN NAMED GLVC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
(February 8, 2000)Kentucky Wesleyan senior forward Leroy John averaged 21.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and shot 61.5 percent from the field in leading the Panthers to two triumphs to
earn Player of the Week honors in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
A 6-8 senior, John scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as KWC defeated St. Joseph's, 98-65, on Thursday. He came back on Saturday to pour in a career-high 25 points and grab 13 more rebounds as KWC cruised past IPFW for its 53rd straight home triumph (the NCAA's [I, II or III] longest home-court winning streak), 108-87.
His numbers for the week: 42 points (21.0 ppg), 26 rebounds (13.0 rpg), 16-29 FGs (61.5 percent), 10-15 FTs (66.7 percent), five steals and two assists. He is a physical education major from Port of Spain, Trinidad.
