BASEBALL PANTHERS SIGN TWO PREP STANDOUTS (June 20, 2000)

Josh Milam from DeSales High School in Louisville, and Jason Kramer from Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers, Ind., have signed national letters-of intent to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and play baseball according to second-year KWC head coach Greg McVey.

Milam, considered one of the top twenty prep players in Kentucky by Baseball America, led the Colts with a .459 batting average and 22 stolen bases as a senior. The three-year starter in centerfield recorded 34 hits, 27 runs batted in, seven doubles, two triples and four homeruns in his final season at DeSales. He twice has been named to the all-district, all-region and all-state teams. Milam also was a two-time Most Valuable Player selection.

"Josh is a great all-around player that will be one of the best players in the Great Lakes Valley Conference before his career is over," said McVey. "He will contribute significantly this upcoming season. Josh has excellent speed on the base paths and a strong throwing arm that will bring much to our outfield."

Kramer, a right-handed pitcher, started for the Royals for two seasons where he was an all-city/county, all-conference honoree plus a honorable mention all-state selection as a senior. He started seven of eight games pitched where he recorded a 3.61 earned run average and 35 strikeouts. Kramer also batted .290 with 18 hits, 11 runs batted in and four doubles.

"Jason has outstanding size and a good split-finger to help improve our pitching staff," said McVey said. "He could log considerable time on the mound next spring."

Milam and Kramer are the second and third signees for the Panthers this year. Jimmy Kreinest from Scott High School in Covington signed last fall.

PANTHERS FINISH SECOND IN BASKETBALL ATTENDANCE PER GAME (June 20, 2000)

Kentucky Wesleyan College for the second-time in four years and third-time in school history finished second in the nation (Div. II) in average men's basketball attendance for the 1999-2000 season with 3,900 per game as released by the NCAA today. The Panthers led the nation in total home attendance with 70,202 in 18 games for the second straight year.

KWC, who led the nation in attendance last season with 4,247 per game, missed repeating by 178 to South Dakota State's 4,077 average. The Panthers would have led the nation in per game average but one game was not played at the 5,002-seat Owensboro Sportscenter due to a tornado that hit the city and campus on Jan. 4, and force the game to be moved to the next day where they played in a 300-seat gym.

Following South Dakota State and Kentucky Wesleyan was Northern State (S.D.) with 3,354, South Dakota with 3,155, Morehouse (Ga.) with 3,033, North Dakota with 2,933, Cal State Bakersfield (2,840), North Dakota State with 2,606, Augustana (S.D.) with 2,554 and Southern Indiana with 2,507.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference, which KWC is a chartered member, finished fifth in attendance for Division II conferences with an average of 1,234 per game. The top league was the North Central Conference with 2,114.

The national average for a Division II game (258 members) in 2000 was 882. The NCAA began reporting basketball attendance figures in 1977.

In the past 20 years, Kentucky Wesleyan has been the only private college or university in Division II national attendance figures. The rest have been state colleges or universities.

Here are the past national attendance rankings at Kentucky Wesleyan:

1981 #5 3,594 1985 #3 4,664 1989 #5 4,280 1993 #6 3,484 1997 #2 3,700

1982 #3 4,200 1986 #2 4,450 1990 #4 4,369 1994 #10 2,949 1998 #4 3,420

1983 #3 4,641 1987 #3 4,340 1991 #5 3,478 1995 #7 2,960 1999 #1 4,247

1984 #3 5,071 1999 #3 4,422 1992 #6 3,232 1996 #13 2,267 2000 #2 3,900

The Panthers have won a record breaking seven NCAA Division II National Championships (1966, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1987, 1990 and 1999).

SOCCER PANTHERS SIGN TWO (June 20, 2000)

Jack Perkins, a midfielder from Muhlenberg North High School in Greenville, and Andy Potter, a striker from DeSales High School in Louisville, have signed national letters-of intent to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and play soccer according to first-year KWC head coach Scott Pulliam.

Perkins, a 1999 graduate of Muhlenberg North, played last season as a freshman at NAIA member Tri-State University in Angola, Ind. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

"Jack has a lot of strength and will fit in at this level," said Pulliam. "He can play at midfield and striker and adds some versatility to our team. Jack is a very coachable player and I look forward to having him for the next three seasons."

The native of Bremen was a four-year letterwinner for the Stars and served as team captain his senior year. His prep honors include all-district selection, 1997 Player of the Year award, Defensive Award, 110 Percent Award and four-time Academic all-State honoree.

Potter, a four-year letterwinner, led the Colts with 16 goals and 14 assists as a senior where he was team captain. He was a starter on DeSales three district championship teams and twice named to the all-district tournament team and once to the all-region squad.

"Andy will make an immediate impact at KWC," says Pulliam. "He is a great athlete and will battle for a starting position as a freshman. Being a two-sport athlete, Andy only played soccer in the fall and I feel that training year round he will even get better."

Perkins and Potter are the fourth and fifth signees for the Panthers this year. Chase Dunaway, Matt Holston, and John Smeathers all from Daviess County (Ky.) High School signed earlier this spring.
