BASKETBALL SIGNS THIRD RECRUIT, TEXAS JUNIOR COLLEGE STANDOUT (May 11, 2000)

Chris Landry, a 6-foot-5 forward from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and play basketball for the seven-time NCAA Division II National Champions according to KWC head coach Ray Harper.

Landry led the Cardinals in scoring with a 16.3 average enroute to a 23-9 record and a trip to NJCAA regional semifinals this past season. He shot a second-best 39.2 percent from three-point territory and a third-best 50.1 percent from the field while shooting 66.1 percent from the free-throw line. Landry also averaged 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

"Chris is a tremendous player that can play four different positions," said Harper. "He's very explosive, can hit the three-pointer, can drive to the basket and plays great defense. Chris was Trinity Valley's best player and a very important key to this recruiting class."

The native of White Castle, La., earned first-team all-conference and all-region honors plus voted to the NJCAA South Central Region all-tournament team. Landry was voted by his teammates and coaches at this season's awards banquet as the Most Outstanding Player, Most Dedicated Player and permanent team captain. He also received for the second straight year the Defensive Player of the Year award. As a freshman, Landry received the Unsung Hero award.

Landry is the third signee for the Panthers this year. Nathan Fortner, a 6-foot-6 forward from Ohio County (Ky.) High School signed in November; and Ronald Evans, a 6-foot-7 forward from Shelby State Community College in Memphis, Tenn. signed on April 13.

Kentucky Wesleyan returns 11 letterwinners including three starters from this past season’s 31-3 squad that finished as NCAA National Runner-Up.
