BASKETBALL RANKED NO. 2 AND DUNCAN NAMED ALL-AMERICAN FOR THIRD TIME
(October 11, 2000)Division II Bulletin magazine tabbed Kentucky Wesleyan No. 2 in their preseason basketball top 25 poll and 6-2 senior guard Lorico Duncan as a first-team All-American selection as announced by publisher and editor Gary Rubin.
This marks the third-time the Panthers have been selected No. 2 and Duncan named All-American when Street & Smith’s and Preview Sports released their rankings and All-Americans last week.
"The Panthers welcome back just two starters from last year’s national runner-up squad (31-3), but eight veterans plus a strong recruiting class should comprise one of the most talented teams in the country," said Rubin.
Florida Southern (32-2) earned top honors followed by KWC, defending NCAA champions No. 3 Metropolitan State (Colo.), No. 4 Southern Indiana, No. 5 Missouri Southern, No. 6 Northern Kentucky, No. 7 Washburn (Kan.), No. 8 Adelphi (NY), No. 9 Salem Teikyo (WVa.) and No. 10 South Dakota.
Rounding out the rest of the Top 25 are No. 11 Wingate (NC), No. 12 Tampa (Fla.), No. 13 Cal State Los Angeles, No. 14 West Chester (Pa.), No. 15 Southern Connecticut, No. 16 Pfeiffer (NC), No. 17 Seattle Pacific (Wash.), No. 18 Fairmont State (WVa.), No. 19 Gannon (Pa.), No. 20 Henderson State (Ark.), No. 21 Winston Salem (NC), No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino, No. 23 American International (Mass.), No. 24 Clarion (Pa.) and No. 25 West Texas A & M.
Division II Bulletin also named Duncan as their preseason Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year. Duncan led the Panthers in scoring (19.6 ppg), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (1.0 spg). He was a third-team All-American honoree and first-team All-Great Lakes Region and All-GLVC selection last season.
KENTUCKY WESLEYAN PICKED NINTH, DEFENDING NCAA CHAMPIONS
NORTHERN KENTUCKY FAVORITE TO REPEAT IN GLVC
(October 10, 2000)If the Great Lakes Valley Conference women’s coaches are correct, the battle is for second place in the 2001 GLVC race. Never has there been a bigger favorite to capture the conference crown than defending NCAA Division II national champion Northern Kentucky (32-2 in 2000). And for good reason.
The Norse return their top nine players and are a clear consensus choice not only to defend their regular season and conference tournament titles, but their national championship as well. NKU won its league games by an amazing average of 17.2 points and should be better this time around.
NKU’s top challengers could be any of three different squads. The coaches pick Southern Illinois Edwardsville (18-9) second, Bellarmine (18-10) third and Southern Indiana (15-12) fourth. Any of the three could emerge as NCAA hopefuls.
Last year’s NCAA entry, Missouri St. Louis (19-11), is picked to finish fifth after losing four starters. Indianapolis (17-12) is picked for sixth after making it to the title game of the GLVC Tournament. The Greyhounds hope to repeat similar success this season. Lewis (17-10) just missed an NCAA bid last year and could also figure in the league race.
Wisconsin Parkside (9-17), Kentucky Wesleyan (12-14), Quincy (6-20) and Saint Joseph’s (6-20) round out the standings. Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne (13-14) has declared Division I status and is not eligible for the conference tournament and championship this season.
The fourth annual GLVC Tournament is scheduled for February 28 through March 3 at Roberts Stadium (12,000) in Evansville, Ind.

KENTUCKY WESLEYAN SLIGHT FAVORITE TO CAPTURE GLVC BASKETBALL TITLE
(October 9, 2000)Defending national runner-up Kentucky Wesleyan is a slight choice to capture the 2001 Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, according to a poll by league men's coaches. The women's poll will be release tomorrow.
KWC captured eight first-place votes and 118 points to ease past Southern Indiana (four first-place, 113 points) and Northern Kentucky (102 points) as the favorite. The Panthers (31-3 in 2000) have won the last three NCAA Great Lakes Region championships and appeared in the last three NCAA title games, winning it all in 1999. KWC lost All-American Leroy John to graduation, but return a solid cast coupled with an outstanding group of recruits in hopes to capturing their record eighth NCAA title.
Southern Indiana (25-6) has reloaded once again and is considered the Panthers' top threat. The Screaming Eagles beat KWC twice last season and returns six of its top players in hopes of earning a 16th NCAA bid. Northern Kentucky (26-7) has five of its top six scorers back and looks like a cinch for its sixth NCAA appearance in seven years.
While the coached feel the race belongs to those three teams, any of several teams could emerge as a surprise. Indianapolis (18-10), Lewis (19-8) and Bellarmine (14-13) are picked next and any could vault into the conference elite. All three had solid seasons last year and return solid squads with good supporting casts.
Missouri St. Louis (12-15), Wisconsin Parkside (8-18), Quincy (10-16), Southern Illinois Edwardsville (9-17) and Saint Joseph's (8-18) all hope to make the eight-team GLVC tournament. Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne is not eligible for the league title since it has declared Division I status.
The fourth annual GLVC Tournament is scheduled for February 28 through March 3 at Roberts Stadium (12,000) in Evansville, Ind.
