NEVY SELECTED TO SOFTBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM (May 7, 2000) 

Kentucky Wesleyan center fielder Sandy Nevy has been selected first team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference in softball as voted on by league coaches.

Nevy, a senior from Kent, Wash., led the Panthers in nine offensive categories: .382 batting average, .588 slugging percentage, 136 at bats, 52 hits, 33 runs scored, 25 runs batted in, 11 doubles, seven stolen bases and five home runs. She was a second team all-conference selection last season.

The Panthers finished the season with a 14-32 record under second-year head coach Fred Gillum.


MARTIN, JARVIS RECEIVE TOP AWARDS AT KWC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL BANQUET (April 30, 2001) 

The Kentucky Wesleyan women's basketball team held its annual team banquet on Sunday in KWC's Health and Recreation Center with senior's Stephanie Jarvis and Crystal Martin taking home top honors.

Jarvis, a 5-foot-6 guard from Bremen, Ky., earned the Heart and Soul Award. She played in 17 games, starting 16, with a chronic back injury that eventual forced her to the sideline late in the season. Despite her injury, Jarvis led the Panthers in three-point shooting (44.8) and free throw shooting (80.8), finished second in minutes played (23.2) and third in scoring (10.7). During her career, she broke four three-point field goal records: career made-162; career percentage-40.7; season made-52; and single game made-nine.

Martin, a 6-foot-1 center from St. Charles, Mo., was named Best All-Around Player. She led the Panthers with 14.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 30.3 minutes played, field goal percentage (58.3) and blocks (23). Martin started all 26 games and was named honorable mention All-Great Lakes Valley Conference in her final season in a Panther uniform.

Brandy Reynolds, a 5-foot-6 freshman guard from Mt. Vernon, Ky., was named Best Defensive Player. She recorded a third-best 20 steals for the Panthers. Reynolds started five of 26 games played averaging 3.2 points, 2.7 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 17.0 minutes.

Amanda Peters, a 5-foot-5 redshirt freshman guard from Elizabethtown, Ky., and Jeanie Boshart, a 5-foot-9 sophomore forward from Louisville, Ky., both received the Most Improved Award.

Peters led the Panthers with 4.0 assists and 34 steals. She started 20 of 26 games averaging a fifth best 7.0 points and 22.5 minutes played. Boshart saw action in 13 games were she averaged nearly two points and one rebound.

Kentucky Wesleyan returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last season's 8-18 squad.


NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS SIGN KENTUCKY ALL-STATE HONOREE (April 30, 2001) 

Dewayne Rogers, a third-team Courier Journal all-state selection from Hart County High School in Mundfordville, Ky., signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and play basketball for the defending and eight-time NCAA Division II National Champions as announced by KWC head coach Ray Harper today.

The 6-foot-4, 185 pounder, led the Raiders with 17.6 points, 2.4 steals and 27.4 minutes per game this past season. Rogers finished second in rebounds (7.8), assists (3.1) and field goal percentage (45.0). He shot 31.7 percent from the three-point arc and 68.3 percent from the free-throw line. His 2000-01 honors include all-district for the fourth staight season and all-region for the third consecutive year plus all-state recognition for the second year in a row. He was an honorable mention all-state as a junior.

"Dewayne is a 6-4 point guard with tremendous potential," said Harper. "One of our needs for this recruiting class was a high school point guard and Dewayne fulfills that need as a solid player with a bright future at Kentucky Wesleyan."

Rogers, a four-year starter, ended in the top five in six career statistical categories at Hart County. He was first in games played (96), second in steals (224), third in rebounds (600) and assists (351), fourth in points (1,423) and fifth in three-pointers (98). His career averages were 15.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.3 steals while shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 37.9 from the three-point territory and 71.3 from the foul-line.

Rogers is the second spring signee for the Panthers along with 6-7 forward Tyrus Boswell from Mississippi State. They join mid-term Div. I transfers 6-4 guard Rob Griffin from Iowa and 6-11 center Pat Schumacher from Missouri to bring the Panther newcomers for the 2001-02 season to four.

Kentucky Wesleyan returns eight letterwinners including two starters from the 31-3 NCAA Championship squad.


SOCCER PANTHERS SIGN NAPIER FROM EAST JESSAMINE HIGH SCHOOL (April 27, 2001)

Kevin Napier, a defender from East Jessamine High School in Nicholasville, Ky., has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and play soccer for the Panthers as announced by KWC head coach Scott Pulliam today.

Napier, a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner, help lead the No. 6 ranked Jaguars to a 18-4 record and a trip to the regional semifinals last season for head coach Tim Doyle. He earned all-conference, all-region and honorable mention all-state honors plus the team's 100 percent award.

"Kevin is a workhorse with a great desire for success," said Pulliam. "He has been well coached and possess outstanding defensive skills. His attitude and discipline will be a great addition to our program".

Napier, son of Rodney and Sherri Napier, plans to major in secondary education.


SPRING FOOTBALL GAME SATURDAY (April 26, 2001) 

The Kentucky Wesleyan College football team concludes its spring practice with the annual Purple/White scrimmage game on Saturday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. CT at the KWC practice field.

The game wraps up a period in which the Panthers practiced 15 times in 30 days and is the last time for the coaching staff to see the players on the 2001 roster before they report for summer drills in August.

Head coach John Johnson, entering his eighth season at KWC, has 47 players including 17 starters (five offensive, 11 defensive,1 specialist) returning from last season's 4-6 squad.

Top returnees for the Panthers are All-Americans Corey Jordan (wr), Tony Black (de), Drew Hall (tb) and FrankWintrich (lb).

Kentucky Wesleyan opens the 2001 campaign at home on Saturday, September 1 at 5 p.m. against Southwest Baptist from Bolivar, Mo.


SOCCER PANTHERS SIGN LEDWEG FROM STATE CHAMPIONS ST. XAVIER (April 19, 2001)

Andrew Ledweg, a defender from St. Xavier High School in Louisville, has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend Kentucky Wesleyan College and play soccer for the Panthers according to KWC head coach Scott Pulliam.

Ledweg, a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner, help lead the Tigers to a 22-4 record and their fifth state championship in November for head coach Andy Shulten. He also played five seasons for the Louisville Soccer Club and Louisville Alliance Futball Club.

"Andrew is a hard-nosed defender with good foot skills," said Pulliam. "He is a left-sided player and will make an immediate impact for us next season. He has played for a high caliber high school and club team and has gained a tremendous amount of experience in big matches".

The three-time academic all-state selection also was named Who's Who Among American High School Students. Ledweg plans to major in business or psychology. He is the son of Joseph and Carolyn Ledweg.


NCAA BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS ADD DIVISION I TRANSFER (April 12, 2001)

Kentucky Wesleyan College, who won their eighth record breaking NCAA Division II National Championship on March 24 and second in three seasons, added Mississippi State junior forward Tyrus Boswell for the 2001-02 season according to Kentucky Wesleyan and 2001 National Coach of the Year Ray Harper.

The 6-foot-7-inch, 240 pounder, from Mountain Brook, Ala., started two of 22 games played for the Bulldogs this season where he averaged 6.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 14.6 minutes. He was second in blocked shots with 18 and shot 51.4 percent from the field, 35.7 percentage from the three-point arc and 71.4 percent from the free-throw line. Mississippi State finished the season 18-13 and a quarterfinalist in the NIT.

"We are extremely excited to have Tyrus come to Kentucky Wesleyan," said Harper. "He is very strong and powerful around the basket at both ends of the court plus he can also step out and hit the three-pointer. Tyrus is exactly what we need to continue our success."

Boswell recorded all his career highs this season with 21 points against Arkansas on Jan. 6; 15 rebounds versus Mississippi Valley on Nov. 21; three assists versus Florida on Jan. 10; three blocks at Auburn on Jan. 31; and two steals against Alabama on Feb. 7. He also scored in double figures six games and recorded three double-doubles in points and rebounds.

The three-year letterwinner for Mississippi State averaged 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore and 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds in limited action as a freshman.

Prior to signing with Mississippi State, he played at Winchendon Prep School in Massachusetts where he led the team with 15.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game in 1998.

The 1997 Alabama High School Player of the Year led Mountain Brook High School with 21.8 points and 13.8 rebounds as a senior. He earned honors as Adidas Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook Top 44 player, rated No. 20 in the nation's Top 50 Incoming College/NBA Freshmen by Future Stars and also ranked 27th nationally in the Top 100 College Freshmen by Recruiting USA.

Boswell is the first spring commitment for the Panthers 2001-02 season. Kentucky Wesleyan returns eight letterwinners including two starters from the 31-3 NCAA Championship squad.


2001 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED (April 9, 2000) 

Kentucky Wesleyan College will play seven NCAA Division I-AA or II opponents on the 2001 football schedule as announced by eighth-year head coach John Johnson.

The 10-game schedule includes a Thursday night contest at Tennessee Martin and four home contests at Apollo Stadium (3,000).

New to the schedule are Bethel (Tenn.), Saint Joseph's (Ind.), Southwest Baptist (Mo.) and Tennessee Martin. The Panthers have previously played Bethel and Saint Joseph's. Returning from last season's slate are Austin Peay, Campbellsville, Cumberland, Missouri Rolla, Morehead State and Quincy.

"The schedule will be very competitive and tough once again," said Johnson. "It is a challenge to play Austin Peay, Morehead State and Tennessee Martin, but it is one that our players love to tackle.

"Playing our longtime rivals Bethel, Campbellsville, Quincy and Saint Joseph's along with Southwest Baptist and Missouri Rolla plus Cumberland constitute a strong solid schedule."
