KENTUCKY WESLEYAN MOVES UP TO NO. 6
(January 29, 2001)Kentucky Wesleyan moved up to No. 6 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Bulletin weekly top 25 men's poll after last week at No. 7.
The Panthers (15-2, 9-2) swept two Great Lakes Valley Conference home games as they defeated SIU Edwardsville, 96-70, on Thursday and upset then No. 1 Southern Indiana, 97-86, on Saturday.
Adelphi (18-0), the nation's only unbeaten team, moved into the top spot followed by Southern Indiana (16-1), Northern Kentucky (18-2), Wingate (18-1), Cal State San Bernardino (15-1), KWC, Salem International (15-2), Alabama Huntsville (15-3), South Dakota (16-3) and Queens (14-2) rounding out the Top 10.
It was another tough week for ranked teams, as 14 were beaten. Five new teams enter this rankings.
Kentucky Wesleyan travels to Quincy (8-9, 4-7) on Thursday and to Missouri St. Louis (8-9, 4-7) on Saturday. Tip-off is 7:30 CT both nights.

(January 15, 2001)Kentucky Wesleyan moved to No. 7 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Bulletin weekly top 25 men's poll after last week at No. 3.
The Panthers (13-2, 7-2) spilt two Great Lakes Valley Conference road contests as they defeated host Indianapolis, 94-90, on Thursday and lost at then No. 7 Northern Kentucky, 106-86, on Saturday.
Southern Indiana (15-0) and Adelphi (15-0) remained No. 1 and 2, with Northern Kentucky (16-2), Wingate (16-1), Cal State San Bernardino (13-1), South Dakota (14-2), KWC, Queens (12-1), Northwest Missouri (14-1) and South Dakota State (15-2) rounding out the Top 10.

The Panthers (12-1, 6-1) won their first 12 before their first loss on Saturday at Lewis (Ill.) 75-70 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup. Southern Indiana (12-0) moved into the top spot followed by Adelphi (12-0), KWC, Salem International (11-1) and Northwest Missouri (13-0).
It was a tough week for most of the Top 25, as 12 teams were defeated since last week's rankings.

NINE FOOTBALL PANTHERS NAMED ALL-AMERICAN,
JORDAN NAMED NATIONAL RECEIVER OF THE YEAR
(January 9, 2000)A record nine Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers were named NCAA Div. II Mid-Major All-American by Football Gazette today. Of the nine honorees, six earned first-team recognition and three honorable mention. This is the most All-Americans chosen in one season at KWC.
The six first-team members are led by National Receiver of the Year Corey Jordan (wr) followed by Tony Black (de), Brian Hoffman (qb), Shaun Logsdon (te), Mark Howell (c) and Frank Wintrich (lb). Honorable mention members are Drew Hall (rb), Joe Nelson (ot) and Anthony Melvin (wr).
Jordan, a 5-foot-7-inch, 152 pound junior from Barnesville, Ga./Lamar County HS, caught a team-best 63 passes for 890 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaged 14.1 yards per catch and 89.0 yards per game this season. Jordan also had 23 kickoff returns of 498 yards for an average of 21.7 yards per return. He recorded a team-best 1,592 in all-purpose yards.
Black, a 5-foot-10-inch, 207 pound sophomore from College Park, Ga./South Cobb HS, led the Panthers with a season record 11 sacks for minus 75 yards and finished fourth in the nation (NCAA Div. II ) in sacks per game with 1.1. Black also led in tackles for loss yards with 17 for minus 98 yards. He recorded 43 total tackles including 25 solos, broke-up two passes and forced one fumble.
Hoffmann, a 6-foot-2-inch, 210 pound senior from Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland HS, broke a total of eight school passing and total offensive records this season. He threw for 2,565 yards and 22 touchdowns by completing 197 of 364 passes for a 54.1 completion percentage. Hoffmann accumulated 2,675 yards in total offense on 458 plays. He was the only player in Division II to be named offensive player of the week twice this season by Football Gazette.
Howell, a 5-foot-10-inch, 245 pound senior from Hardinsburg, Ky./Breckinridge County HS, started six of seven games played this season and has started 37 career games that included 30 in a row in four years. He was voted by his teammates the last two seasons as team co-captain.
Logsdon, a 6-foot-4-inch, 238 pound senior from Leitchfield, Ky./Grayson County HS, caught a second-best 40 passes for 477 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 11.9 yards per catch and 47.7 yards per game this season. Logsdon in four seasons broke the college's career receiving record for tight ends with 104 receptions for 1,238 yards and five touchdowns for 30 points.
Wintrich, a 6-foot-3-inch, 225 pound junior from Seminole, Fla./Seminole HS, led the Panthers with 94 total tackles including 51 solos and 10 tackles for lost yardage. Wintrich had three sacks, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, starting all ten games this season
Hall, a 5-foot-10-inch, 214 pound junior from Owensboro, Ky./Owensboro HS, led KWC with 810 yards rushing on 115 attempts and 12 touchdowns, averaging 7.0 yards per carry and 101.2 yards per game this season. Hall also caught nine passes for 88 yards and one touchdown.
Melvin, a 6-foot-2-inch, 184 pound senior from Radcliff, Ky./North Hardin HS, caught a fourth-best 36 passes for 578 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per catch and 57.8 yards per game this season. He led the Panthers with 30 kickoff returns of 567 yards for an average of 18.9 yards per return. Melvin recorded a second-best 1,154 in all-purpose yards.
Nelson, a 6-foot-2-inch, 282 pound senior from Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS, started all ten games played this season and has started 34 of 37 career games in four years. He was voted by his teammates the last two seasons as team co-captain.
Kentucky Wesleyan finished with a 4-6 record with the Panthers breaking 28 records and tieing one under the leadership of seventh-year head coach John Johnson.

(January 8, 2001)Kentucky Wesleyan moved up to the No. 1 spot in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Bulletin weekly top 25 men's poll after six weeks at No. 2.
The Panthers (11-0, 5-0) took over the top spot when previous No. 1 Florida Southern lost three games since the last poll. Southern Indiana (11-0) rose to second followed by Adelphi (9-0), Northern Kentucky (13-1) and Wingate (13-0). Seven new teams entered the Top 25.
The last time Kentucky Wesleyan was No. 1 was in 1999 when they started and finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. They were No. 1 nine of the 11 weeks during the season including the last poll on Feb. 22. KWC went on to win their seventh NCAA Championship with a 35-2 record in 1999.
The Panthers go on the road for two Great Lakes Valley Conference contests this week. They play at Wisconsin Parkside (5-5, 2-3) on Thursday at 7:45 in Kenosha and at Lewis (4-7, 2-3) on Saturday at 3:15 in Romeoville, Ill.

6-11 CENTER TRANSFERS FROM UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI
(January 4, 2001)Former University of Missouri center Pat Schumacher, a 6-foot-11-inch, 242-pounder from St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central HS, has transferred to seven-time NCAA Division II National Champion Kentucky Wesleyan College according to KWC head coach Ray Harper.
Schumacher, who will begin playing for the Panthers in 2001-02, played in Missouri's season opener on Nov. 17 against Savannah State where he had two points and two rebounds before deciding to transfer. He averaged 1.6 points and 1.3 rebounds in 25 games last season as a sophomore and 3.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in 28 games as a freshman.
No. 2 ranked Kentucky Wesleyan, 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will host league foe the Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons (4-9, 1-2) tonight at 7:30 CT. The Panthers won the NCAA titles in 1966, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1987, 1990 and 1999.
