New Student Orientation

Welcome to Kentucky Wesleyan College New Student Orientation 2016

August 20-23, 2016

New Student Orientation is a four-day academic and social experience to assist incoming students with their transition into Kentucky Wesleyan College. Because of the importance of material presented at New Student Orientation, it is a required activity for all new, incoming students.

**All new students should check-in at Rogers Hall in the Winchester Center when arriving on campus.  To make your check-in process easier, please take care of the following before arriving if possible:

  • Pay your deposits—Housing ($100.00), Mailbox ($10.00) and Laundry Card ($10.00)
  • Parking Pass— Go to kwc.thepermitstore.com and complete the online process.  We will have the forms waiting for you when you arrive
  • Student Portal—Log on to the portal.  Through the portal you should be able to check your schedule, financial aid, housing assignment and much more.  This is an easy way to verify your information and get in touch with your professors
  • Financial Aid—Call or visit our Financial Aid Office to ensure everything is settled regarding your account.  Phone number = 270-852-3120
  • Bill/Payment Questions—Call or Visit Stephanie Wilson in our Business Office.  Phone number = 270-852-3108
  • Renters Insurance—Check with your homeowners insurance and see if your possessions are covered when you live in a residence hall.  If not, consider Renters insurance.  Generally, this type of insurance is very inexpensive and easy way to protect your personal possessions.

 

  • Saturday, August 20

    • 8:00 am-12:00 pm: Residential Student Check-inStudents living on campus move into their residence halls during this time period after completing clearances in the Winchester Center. Student leaders, faculty, and staff will be on hand to welcome students and families and assist them with moving belongings into your new home.2:00 pm: Commuter Student Check-inCommuter students check-in at Rogers Hall in the Winchester Center.3:00 pm: First Orientation Group Meeting (wear your new Orientation T-shirt)Student Orientation Staff (SOSers) will meet with their orientation groups for the first time.3:30 pm:  PLAYFAIR!

      5:00 pm: Welcome Dinner

      Join President Bart Darrell, faculty, and staff at the annual Welcome Dinner on the Front Lawn.

      6:30 pm: Procession to The Grove

      This campus tradition marks the official beginning of your college career.  New Students are ceremonially passed from the Admission Staff to the Student Services and Academic Affairs staff.  Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Paula Dehn, will lead the incoming class to The Grove, the site of your upcoming 2020 graduation, and present a charge to the class

      7:00 pm: Orientation groups meet

      9:00 pm: Residential Life Meeting

      This meeting is mandatory for all residential students.

 

  • Sunday, August 21

    • 10:00 am: Welcome Church Service Join us to celebrate the beginning of the school year with a special church service at Wesleyan Heights Methodist Church.  Dr. Jim Coleman, Kentucky Wesleyan religion professor and head pastor at Wesleyan Heights, will lead us in worship.11:00am-1:00 pm: Brunch in the Cafeteria1:00pm -5:00 pm: Block sessions ILearn about the following during small group sessions:

      – Kentucky Wesleyan College History

      – Academic Support Services

      – College 101

      – Take a special campus tour

      5:30 pm: Dinner available in the Cafeteria

      8:00 pm: Fitness Jam at the YMCA

      A YMCA membership is included in your enrollment at Kentucky Wesleyan Colelge.  Join us for an open-house where you can experience several activities offered by the Y:

      – Open pool

    •      – Mini-Zumba class
    •      – Mini-yoga class
    •      – Mini-kick boxing class
    •      – Open gym
    •      – Open weight room
    •      – Cardio machines

 

  • Monday, August 22

    • 10:00 am-1:00 pm: Groups explore Downtown Owensboro11:00 am-2:00 pm: Groups explore Downtown Owensboro2:00 pm-5:00 pm: Block Sessions IILearn about the following during small group sessions:

      – Technology on campus

      – Library

      – Career Services

      – Student Conduct/The Wesleyan Way

      5:30 pm: Dinner available in the Cafeteria

      9:30 pm: Hypnotist in Rogers Hall

      Hypnotist Daniel James has appeared on America’s Got Talent, The Tonight Show, The Ellen Show and at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Join us for his lightning-fast, high energy, interactive show.

 

  • Tuesday, August 23

    • 9:00am-11:00am           Community Volunteer ProjectsFive Orientation Groups will participate in a service project at a local service agency.  These includeWesleyan Heights Methodist Church,the Boys and Girls Club,

      the Raptor Center,

      Western Kentucky Botanical Garden,

      Daniel Pitino Shelter,

      Elizabeth Munday Senior Center,

      Wendell Foster Center, and

      Girls, Inc.

       

      9:00pm-Noon: Block Sessions III

      Learn about the following during small group sessions:

      – Wellness

      – Alcohol

      – Sexual Assault

      11:30 am-1:30 pm: Lunch available in the Cafeteria

      1:00 pm-3:00 pm: Community Volunteer Projects

      Five Orientation Groups will participate in a service project at a local service agency. These include:

      – Wesleyan Heights Methodist Church

      – The Boys and Girls Club

      – The Raptor Center

      – Western Kentucky Botanical Garden

      – Daniel Pitino Shelter

      – Elizabeth Munday Senior Center

      – Wendell Foster Center

      1:00 pm-4:00 pm: Block Sessions IV

      8:00 pm: Student Involvement Fair and Ice Cream Social

      Join us in Rogers Hall for the Student Involvement Fair, sponsored by your Student Government Association (SGA).  Student organizations will host tables where you can learn about available activities and benefits of membership.  Ice cream will be provided and each organization will provide yummy toppings.

FOCUS TEST — Preparation for Life After KWC

Take the FOCUS test. FOCUS is an online career and educational planning tool. You will need to register and create an account. It will take about an hour and can be broken down into shorter intervals as it saves your work. When you have completed all parts, chooseReview and Print your Portfolio from the main menu, select all assessment areas, then print .Then place your completed portfolio in the drop box outside Student Life in the Winchester Center by 5 p.m., Monday, August 24, 2015.  All work must have your name on it and be stapled together. Points will be deducted for late work.
