Pre-Engineering

Pre-Engineering at KWC

About the Program
Kentucky Wesleyan offers dual-degree pre-professional preparation for students seeking admission to university engineering programs. Upon completion of approximately three years (88 hours minimum) at KWC, you will be prepared to apply to an accredited engineering school.

When you complete the engineering school curriculum, you will then receive an undergraduate B.S. degree from KWC (typically in physics, chemistry or applied mathematics) and a second B.S. degree from the engineering school.

KWC's curriculum to satisfy engineering school requirements includes a minimum of three semesters of physics, two semesters of computer science, five semesters of calculus, and two semesters of chemistry. (Pre-Chemical Engineering requires more chemistry courses.)

The remainder of the curriculum includes coursework necessary to fulfill degree requirements at KWC and the selected engineering school.

Engineering School Preparation
Most engineering programs have a common core of under-graduate pre-engineering courses required for admission. After you select two or three professional engineering programs of interest, a faculty advisor assists you in designing an educational curriculum to prepare for entrance requirements. Your advisor will also help you determine when to apply to an engineering program. Most engineering schools have a minimum GPA required for admission.

KWC Engineering Students
KWC Pre-Engineering students have been accepted into engineering programs at the University of Kentucky, Vanderbilt University, Auburn University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, the University of North Carolina, the University of the Pacific, Western Kentucky University, the University of Illinois-Champaign-Urbana and the University of Evansville.

Our graduates have been successful in many engineering fields including automotive, chemical, civil and structural, computer, electrical, forensic, safety and testing.

Scholarships/Assistantships
Most science majors at Kentucky Wesleyan receive academic scholarships. Many also serve as assistants in science laboratories, classrooms and offices. Assistantships provide valuable learning experiences for students. We encourage all pre-engineering students to participate in this program.

Summer Research
The faculty encourages students to take part in science summer research programs in university and governmental laboratories. KWC students have recently participated in programs at the Universities of Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee and New Mexico, as well as Vanderbilt University, Oak Ridge National Laboratories and the OMHS Cancer Research Center.
