Pre-Pharmacy at KWC

About the Program
Kentucky Wesleyan College offers pre-professional preparation for students seeking admission to pharmacy programs. Upon completion of a specified curriculum, you will be prepared to apply for admission to an accredited college of pharmacy.

KWC's pre-pharmacy curriculum includes a minimum of five semesters of chemistry and biology, two semesters of physics and one semester of calculus.

Degree Options
You have two options to gain acceptance into pharmacy school from KWC.

The first option is to complete two or three years of study at KWC (minimum 66 hours), fulfilling requirements for admission to pharmacy school. In the second or third year of attending KWC, you may take the Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT). Students with very high GPAs and PCAT scores may be accepted to pharmacy school with less than four years of college at KWC.

The second option is to complete a B.S. or B.A. degree (typically in biology or chemistry) at KWC and then apply to pharmacy school. Pharmacy school candidates will take the PCAT during their third year at KWC.

Pharmacy School Preparation
Most pharmacy programs have a common core of undergraduate courses required for admission. After KWC Pre-Pharmacy students select two or three programs of interest, a faculty advisor will provide guidance by determining appropriate curriculum and preparing you to take the PCAT, and by furnishing necessary letters of recommendation. An exceptional academic record and high scores on the PCAT are typically necessary to gain admission to pharmacy school.

Scholarships/Assistantships
Most chemistry and biology majors at Kentucky Wesleyan receive academic scholarships. Many also serve as assistants in science laboratories, classrooms and offices. Assistantships provide valuable learning experiences for students. We encourage all pre-pharmacy students to participate in this program.

Summer Research
The faculty encourages students to take part in health science summer research programs in university and governmental laboratories. KWC students have recently participated in programs at the Universities of Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee and New Mexico, as well as Vanderbilt University, Oak Ridge National Laboratories and the OMHS Cancer Research Center.
