The Bonner Leader Program at Kentucky Wesleyan College aims to support diverse low-income, under-represented, and first generation students to attend college while providing them the opportunity to build and support our local community.
“The Bonner Program is designed to transform not only the students who are directly supported by the program, but also the campus and community in which they serve and learn. The goals of the program are identified in four areas: student development, community involvement, campus engagement, and higher education.” (from the Bonner Program website). Details of the National Bonner Program Goals can be found at http://www.bonner.org/goals.
Our Wesleyan goals are student, institution and community-focused:
- provide opportunities for our students to gain tangible, service-oriented skills while boosting their resumes (STUDENT)
- provide community partner organizations with meaningful assistance through committed, consistent, capable volunteers who can increase an organization’s capacity to fulfill its mission (COMMUNITY)
- serve as a recruiting tool for high-achieving students and for those with the potential to develop into leaders (INSTITUTION)
- create an opportunity for donors interested in service and community engagement to connect with the college by supporting the success of these students (INSTITUTION)
The Bonner Program also lays out ten student learning outcomes.
