Why did you choose to attend Wesleyan?
Several family members had attended or graduated from Kentucky Wesleyan. I found the small campus and individual attention appealing.
What was your major?
Political science
What Wesleyan professors influenced you and why?
Dr. Lee Dew was my main advisor and a huge mentor for me. He was smart and tough and set the bar very high. I wanted to do my best work for him.
Mr. Richard Ford, an Owensboro attorney, taught a night class on problem resolutions and encouraged me to apply to law school. He opened up a new world that became my career. Law had not been on my radar before.
Tell us about your service as a trustee.
I joined the Board of Trustees in 2012 and had been involved with the Alumni Board prior to that. I have loved being involved in the oversight function for the College and getting to know the other trustees. They are an impressive and dedicated group.
As a graduate of the College and as a trustee, what advice would you give to current students as they prepare for their futures?
Seek advice from your professors. Be open to opportunities and involve yourself in a variety of experiences. Do not be afraid to say “yes.”
How did Wesleyan help make you the person you are today?
Wesleyan helped me think and write and gave me the basis for success in law school, which provided the path for my career. Wesleyan opened the door for several internships with Sen. Wendell H. Ford’s Field Office, the Kentucky Department of Revenue in Frankfort and the law offices of Richard (Dick) Flaherty.
What are your favorite leisure activities?
I love to spend time with family and friends. I also enjoy theatre and the ballet and being involved in my church and community boards where I serve.
Favorite book, movie, TV show?
I love all the public television productions through Masterpiece Theatre, especially “Downton Abbey.” I will surely miss the show when the season concludes.
Do you have a bucket list of places you would like to visit?
Victoria Falls, Namib Desert, Capetown
How do you envision Kentucky Wesleyan in five years?
The trend is very positive for our College. I am so proud of Wesleyan and the potential on the horizon. We have terrific leadership on all levels. All of these positives will translate into growth in student enrollment and increased alumni engagement.
