The Sophomore Experience Program

Learn MORE. Lead MORE. Be MORE. SophoMORE.

The Sophomore Experience Program at Wesleyan, introduced by the-Director and current VP of Student Affairs, Rebecca McQueen, in August 2014, seeks to engage students in the career and major exploration process, encourages involvement on and off campus and helps students develop as whole persons who are prepared to be successful graduates.

Every event is designed to support students academically and/or socially as they prepare for graduation and a successful career, and these events have included:

  • Sophomore Summit kicked off the academic year in preparation for the second year of college
  • Winter break trip to volunteer at “Give Kids the World”
  • Monthly career panels with local alumni in specific majors
  • Graduate school fair
  • Resume workshops
  • Seminars on fiscal responsibility, time management and stress management
  • Monthly “Mystery Bus Tours” to other cities
  • Monthly Sophomore Serve community service events

Students were enthusiastic about their involvement in the Sophomore Experience Program, and at the end of the first year of the program, in May 2014, several students shared these comments:

“I feel more confident about the major I’ve chosen.”

“I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay in college, but now I know I can make it to graduation.”

“I’ve made more friends and feel that I fit in now.”

“It was fun and helpful. I’ve got tools now to help me as I look ahead to my last two years.”

Rebeeca McQueen shares, “This is a great collaborative effort between student life, academics and athletics to focus on student success and retention in new ways. Everyone is working together to make a difference for our students.”
