Biography

Mrs. Thurman serves as the campus Title IX officer for students who experience sex-based discrimination or harassment. She worked for 28 years as a social studies teacher at Owensboro High School, where she was a department chair, academic team coach, National Honor Society sponsor, KYA/KUNA sponsor, mock trial coach, assessment coordinator, and ACT testing site supervisor. Mrs. Thurman worked closely with the special education department at Owensboro High School in placing many neurodivergent students in her elective classes for collaboration and mainstreaming opportunities.

Mrs. Thurman has also taught as an adjunct history professor at Brescia, OCTC, and Western Kentucky University

After her retirement from the classroom, Mrs. Thurman served as the Development Officer for Girls Inc and later as the Non-Residential Supervisor for Oasis Outreach.

Mrs. Thurman is a 1994 graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority, SAPB, Alpha Chi Honor Society, and also served as a resident advisor. She earned a master of arts degree in history as well as an additional master of arts degree in educational administration both from Western Kentucky University. She also received the prestigious James Madison Fellowship and attended Georgetown University where she studied constitutional law.

Mrs. Thurman serves on the board of My Sister’s Keeper and is the Corps Sergeant Major of the Owensboro Salvation Army where she leads the weekly homeless feeding ministry, teaches Sunday School, and plays in the brass band. Mrs. Thurman and her husband Todd have two children Max and Gracie.
