Perform, design, and create for the stage and beyond

The Theatre Arts program at Kentucky Wesleyan College develops performers, directors, and designers through coursework in acting, stagecraft, and theatre history. Students gain practical experience in productions while preparing for careers in performance, education, and the arts.

Theatre Arts Program Features

At Kentucky Wesleyan, the Theatre Arts program blends classroom study with hands-on production experience. Students train in acting, directing, stagecraft, and theatre history while discovering their unique artistic voices. Faculty mentors provide personalized instruction in small classes and workshops, guiding both creative and professional growth. Engaged learning includes multiple annual productions, design opportunities, and performance showcases that allow students to apply their skills in real time. Students also explore technical theatre, script analysis, and contemporary performance styles. Internships with regional theatres and community organizations expand professional networks. By graduation, you’ll leave with a strong portfolio of performance and technical experience, ready for careers in the arts or advanced study.

Career Paths

Actor or Performer – Actors bring stories to life on stage, film, or television. They develop characters, rehearse scripts, and perform for audiences in professional or community productions.

Director – Directors shape the artistic vision of a production. They interpret scripts, guide actors, and coordinate technical teams to create cohesive performances.

Theatre Educator (with Certification) – Theatre educators teach drama and performance in schools, fostering creativity and confidence in students while directing school productions.

Stage or Production Manager – Stage managers oversee rehearsals, performances, and technical crews. They ensure productions run smoothly from planning to final curtain.

Playwright or Screenwriter – Writers craft original scripts for theatre, film, or television, developing compelling stories and dialogue for production.

Arts Administrator – Arts administrators manage theatres, performance companies, or cultural organizations. They handle budgets, programming, and outreach to keep the arts accessible and thriving.

Theatre Arts Program Requirements

The Theatre Arts major requires approximately 39–42 credit hours. Core courses include Acting I & II, Stagecraft, Theatre History, and Script Analysis. Students also complete electives in directing, design, playwriting, or technical theatre to match their career interests. Participation in productions each semester provides continuous performance and backstage experience. A senior project or capstone—such as a directed scene, performance, or design portfolio—demonstrates mastery of the discipline. Faculty mentorship supports students in developing a professional résumé and audition or portfolio materials. This curriculum ensures graduates are prepared for careers in theatre, education, or related creative industries, as well as graduate study in the performing arts.
