Student Success Center FAQ

  •  What is the SSC?

    • The SSC is the academic support hub at KWC that prides itself on its commitment to peer-to-peer education. We provide tutoring, supplemental instruction, one-on-one consultations with a Student Success Coach, academic workshops, and more to help students achieve their goals at KWC. All of our tutors are also students at KWC who excel academically and illustrate an exceptional devotion to the Panther community.

  • What are some key services you offer?

    • The SSC offers hourly, appointment-based and walk-in tutoring in a wide variety of subjects. We also provide SIs in numerous courses across campus who hold additional guided group study sessions for students. Students can meet with a Student Success Coach for any reason. In addition, the SSC provides academic workshops for students looking to build their skills as learners.

  •    What is an SI?

    • SI stands for Supplemental Instructor. An SI is a student who has passed a given course with an A and receives a recommendation from an instructor. The student will then sit-in on the course of their specialty, take notes, and facilitate study sessions for the benefit of students in the course.

  • Do I have to make an appointment?

    • No: you can walk in. Both tutors and student success coach office hours offer first-come-first-serve as needed consultations for students.

  • How do I meet with a Success Coach?

    • Email todd.richardson@kwc.edu. Our student success coach is willing to meet with any student about any issue, even if you need to just talk things through.

  •  Will someone at the SSC edit my paper?

    • No, not even a little bit. Writing tutors do not “fix” papers. The focus of writing tutoring is to empower students by teaching them about the choices they make when writing, as well as help students navigate assignments and understand specific aspects of assignment instructions. You should expect to read through the paper out loud with your tutor and talk through your writing. Tutors are not allowed to copy edit papers and hand them back to you.

  • Can someone at the SSC help me with my homework?

    •  Yes, as long as the assignment doesn’t specify otherwise.

  •   Can you help me with a quiz or test?

    •  No, not unless the instructor has specifically stated otherwise.

  •  What if I have questions about something that isn’t strictly an academic concern?

    • Make an appointment with a student success coach and talk with them about it. Everyone at the SSC understands that being a student is difficult and complicated. We understand that circumstances outside of school impact education. The SSC may not have all the solutions to the obstacles you face, but we will help connect you to the other resources across campus. Come in with your questions and concerns, and we’ll do our best to help.

  • I am an athlete, and I can’t meet with a tutor of the subject I need help in during their scheduled hours. What do I do?

  • Am I allowed to be in the SSC even if I don’t have an appointment?

    • Yes, absolutely. Students are allowed to study or sit quietly in the SSC at their leisure. We only ask that you not disturb other students trying to study in the SSC, too.

  • Are you a testing center?

    • No. The SSC does collaborate with the Office of Accessibility in providing quiet testing areas, but the SSC does not proctor tests for missed exams.

  •   What other services do you offer that I should know about?

    • We offer some free school supplies to students (note cards, pencils, pens, paper, folders, student planners) and some snacks (while supplies last).
